The esmf-build-base image includes systemwide software, installed by root, and creates a new user dev that can be used to install a software stack. The root user account can still be accessed using su and the password for both users is password.

The dev user installs Spack for package management and gdb for debugging. A login script .bashrc is used to load Spack into the PATH.
