kleen/tor repository overview

This image provides Tor (The Onion Routing) as a standalone container. It is especially useful as a shared SOCKS proxy in containerized environments: place the container into a named Docker network and other containers on the same network can reach Tor via hostname tor on port 9050 — i.e. use tor:9050 as a SOCKS5 proxy (effectively socks5h, meaning DNS resolution is performed through Tor rather than the client’s local resolver). This lets you route traffic through Tor without running a separate Tor instance in every application container.

For advanced use, configuration is fully customizable: you can override the default configuration by bind-mounting your own /etc/tor/torrc (the file from the image is masked at that path) and start Tor with custom settings. This enables alternative ports, bridges/pluggable transports, onion services, or tailored logging.

Build: The image is based on Debian and installs Tor from the official Tor Project package repository (deb.torproject.org), including signature verification via the corresponding keyring.
